Mo’Nique has a show?

If you don’t know who Mo’Nique is…stop reading this. Also find your nearest bridge.Don’t jump, but think about how bad it would hurt so you know better next time.

When I started seeing the commercials this summer for the Mo’Nique’s new talk show I was pretty excited. There aren’t enough representations of real women on TV.Real women who aren’t afraid to be loud and show flaws. Women who are less concerned with being pretty and more interested in having an interesting and funny conversation. So needless to say I was going to check it out. Then I remembered…no BET in Ottawa (a blog for another time). So along with missing re runs of “The Game” and “Sister Sister” I wouldn’t be able to see this new show. Sad day.

But then, a day after the premiere Fall Break came and I got a chance to see Mo’Nique in action. She has a nice set up, open and interactive, all that you would expect from a former host of  the Apollo. A colorful back drop and comfortable Oprah esque couches, none of that late night talk show host behind a desk stuff. So we were off to a good start, cool opening music, a nice funny dance off with her sidekick, and Mo’Nique in a very cute purple dress. Thus far, I approve.

Hol’ up hol up! Mo’Nique I’m happy for you and I’mma let you finish but Aresenio had the best Black late night show of all time! OF ALL TIME!!!

I had to do it….ok back  business

Lets just list out the good and bad.

Bad: Mo’Nique yells a lot. I suppose she has always done that in her comedy act but somehow it seems ridiculously less appropriate in this setting. Its a ridiculous misuse of inside, outside voice but its Mo’Nique so no one says ANYTHING(!!!)

Good: She has really nice teeth so when her mouth is open wide there is no yuck mouth factor. See? Silver lining.

Bad: Mo’Nique might be too famous. She knows a lot of people so  sometimes when guests come on she doesn’t seem to be interviewing them but talking with an old friend.

Good: She is familiar with her guests and there is no real awkward factor. She isn’t afraid of anyone and breaks that barrier quickly and in an easy fashion that leaves no time for uncomfortable body language. (See how those last two sound the same but different? You think its easy but it’s not)

So all in all I think this show is a good thing and over time Mo’Nique will work out the kinks and I’m sure a second season will bring a bigger budget and an even better set. I can’t personally support it the way that I would like to and know that I need to in order to keep positive (for the most part) representations of women, and especially Black women on TV. But that isn’t my fault. Its because there is no BET in Ottawa. Not that I’m bitter or anything.

So wrap your arms around yourself and squeeze real tight. You have ALL just been hugged. Now everybody on the stage and dance!

If you don’t know what that’s about…you probably never will unless you can YouTube it or something because you know, there is no BET in Ottawa.Just saying……

this is my first evening watching Mo’s show. I agree, like being a voyuer watching friends chat but I like the personal freeness….however my interest RIGHT NOW is this purple dress she has on ( now interviewing Rocky Carroll). Any word on where i can get a similar dress?!?? Burrhday in March would look yummi in my sort of humble opinion lol!!!

    • I have no clue on the dress but maybe try BET.com.That would be my best guess.
